Solar panel pigeon proofing

Birds can be really dangerous to solar panels. If they are not protected, these birds may cause the entire system to shut down. They are also noisy, messy and can pose health risks to humans that come into contact with them or their droppings.

This is why it is important that solar panels are protected against birds. There are several different types of protections available for this purpose, but one of the most effective ones is bird proofing your solar panels — also known as pigeon proofing your solar panels.

Why bird proof my solar panels

When you think of solar panels pigeons might not come to mind, but perhaps they should. Pigeon droppings can severely damage your solar panels.

Pigeons are drawn to the UV light provided by the sun and pose a serious problem for commercial, residential, and industrial rooftop businesses who utilise the sun’s energy in one way or another. The acidity found in pigeon waste is extremely corrosive (pH 3-5). The resulting damage includes loss of panel efficiency due to short circuits caused by debris buildup on conductors; discoloration that renders the panel unusable; and staining caused by encrustation that degrades both performance and aesthetics.

Solar panel cleaning specialists

First Premium Restorations of Derby specialises in many types of solar panel cleaning services designed specifically for commercial, residential, and utility-scale solar customers. Their highly experienced technicians are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (a truly impressive statistic) to keep solar panels on roofs or in large-scale arrays clean of dirt, dust, debris, and pigeon droppings.

Signs that your solar panels require professional cleaning before efficiency is impacted

Signs that pigeons are nesting behind your solar panels

Mounting brackets on the back of solar panels may be dirty or excessively soiled with bird droppings. Solar panel surfaces may appear dusty or greyish if left uncleaned for too long. Panel edges may show signs of bird guano stains making them darker than surrounding cells which can affect production readings by not reflecting light evenly. Usually their comings and goings are a dead giveaway, as many people will tell you the noise can ruin your sleep with their nesting antics. Not the quietest of creatures!

If you see any of these signs it’s time to call in help from professionals to conduct thorough solar panel cleaning.

What will you do to bird proof my solar panels?

When we arrive at your home we will safely access your roof and make an assessment of your solar panels. We will check behind the panels for any damage and then remove any pigeons humanely, together with the mess and debris they create. Once we have cleaned the back of the panels we will install PVC coated galvanised mesh around the perimeter of all solar panels to guarantee no more infestation and further damage! We also clear out the guttering below and downpipes, plus we professionally wash your solar panels so they will offer maximum performance once again. We are so confident in our pigeon proofing solar panel protection system, that if any birds get behind your panels we offer a guarantee that we will remove them straight away!

Warning!

Be careful who you use to fit your solar panel guards, as some contractors will screw the mesh to the panels. This is a mistake that could damage your panels and affect your warranty. Premium Restorations of Derby only use specialised nylon clips, that cause zero damage and never rust, split or deteriorate. Call us now and get the job done right by a team that knows what they are doing, and rest in the knowledge that your expensive solar panels are in safe hands!

Solar panels are not only subject to the elements but also bird droppings.

Pigeons or birds can cause irreversible damage to solar panels by contaminating them with droppings that harden, melt and warp the surfaces of cells. This type of contamination can result in permanent malfunctions within a solar power system. With continued build up over time, these contaminants will reduce the efficiency of your rooftop or large-scale photovoltaic (PV) Array by reducing the conversion rate of sunlight into energy.

Roof Cleaning

Signs you need professional cleaning

If you have noticed any of the signs listed below then it’s time to call professionals for full treatment against pigeons who are drawn towards this area due to its location.

Pigeons are cute, but they eat everything.

This is a problem for pigeons because their digestive systems are not built to process most of what they find on the pavements, so usually birds just get rid of it. Unfortunately for us, this means that they will get rid of things which humans care about too – like clean solar panels! So if you have solar panels on your roof top or yard you might want to know how to stop pigeons from pooping on them.

What is pigeon proofing after all?

Most people don’t really need pigeon proofing until their roof or yard has been infested with birds. The time when this happens varies depending on how many pigeons live in an area and whether any predators scare them off. Usually pigeon proofing is a step taken in order to prevent any damage from occurring, rather than to fix the problem after it has started. The good news, however, is that pigeons are not known for causing very much damage once they move on from a certain location – instead they usually just leave behind some mess!

What will happen if I don’t pigeon proof my solar panels?

In most cases you should be able to get away with having stained solar panels which still work perfectly fine. In some instances where there are lots of birds around or particularly stubborn droppings it can lead to reduced output of power – this only really becomes an issue if you need all the power which your solar panels produce (in most cases you should be using regular electricity at night or when it is overcast, preventing the need to generate power which you cannot use).

What can I do to prevent pigeons from landing on my solar panels?

There are many different methods that people have come up with for keeping pigeons away. The most effective tend to involve making it difficult for them to land on your roof and also not providing a comfortable place for them to sit while they wait for more of their flock mates.

Why can’t I just go out and buy a pack of pigeon spikes?

Pigeon spikes unfortunately only work in very specific circumstances. If you buy a pack of pigeon spikes and install them on the roof with no other type of predator guard (such as anti roosting spikes) then they may be rendered completely ineffective within a week or two. The pigeons will simply land near to where you’ve put the spikes, stand on them and wait for their friends to join in using your panels.

Best way to avoid pigeons nesting behind your solar panels.

The most effective way to keep pigeons away is to use an all in one solution such as pigeon proofing guards installed around the perimeter of your panels, this way it will be impossible for them to nest and re-enter underneath your panels. These strong industrial grade nylon guards are clipped onto the panels, so there is no need to screw fix, something we do not recommend, as this method could damage your solar panels, and also void your warranty!.

Why is pigeon proofing solar panels a good idea

You may have heard of the term ‘bird poop’ before but are you aware that bird droppings are actually acidic enough to corrode steel, brick and stone? This one fact alone should make you aware of how dangerous regular exposure to these droppings can be for your solar panels.

Though often known as ‘pigeon proofing’, this form of deterrence should not just be limited to pigeons or birds like them; any small animal could pose a problem. Rats, squirrels and mice could also potentially cause damage if they get too close; it’s best to ensure all animals stay at least 7-10 feet away from the panel systems.

In relation to solar panels, it is a good idea to protect them from pigeons as their poop can affect how well the panel works by blocking sunlight or creating an electrical short circuit with the metal frame of the panel. In addition, if there is water on top of a solar panel this will also create an electrical current between these surfaces through electrolysis. The resulting current flowing through the poopwater mixture may result in a fire hazard – another reason why you should have your solar panels pigeon proofed.

Pigeons frequently land on or fly close to roofs in urban areas.

They are protected by law unless they pose a threat. They usually do not present too much of an issue when it comes to roof maintenance but the acidity of their droppings can cause long term damage if left uncontrolled.

Pigeons will often go through extensive effort in order to gain easy access to flat roofs. Over many years, under the protection of pigeon-related laws, pigeons have adapted and learned that these areas provide shelter and safety with very little risk. If you detect one or more pigeons perching on your roof then most likely there will be more than just one! The worst part about this is that once they land on your roof, the only way down is through nesting which means that there will be an abundance of pigeons already waiting on the roof before they have even settled.

Pigeons are very intelligent creatures and can easily be trained to do good things for us, however, this isn’t the case when it comes to our roofs and solar panels. They search and find areas where there is shelter and easy access with little effort – this applies to rooftops and solar panels, whether on a home or business.

Pigeons will leave droppings anywhere they land which means that solar panels are an open invitation for some fresh excrement – not something that we would like to receive each day. The acidity contained in pigeon droppings is often enough to cause permanent damage over time if left untreated.

The question then arises: how quickly do pigeons build nests under solar panels?

In most cases, they will get to work pretty quickly. Pigeons are known for being industrious when it comes to building their nests, and they will often start constructing a nest within just a few days of finding a new location. This means that property owners and managers need to be proactive in preventing pigeons from nesting under solar panels. If left unchecked, the birds can do serious damage in a short period of time.
